Work, School, HotSauce

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Approximately 10 work hours left before I am once again unemployed… but possibly not for long.  I found an open position doing computer work for the school of medicine.  I sent them an email and resume and I got a reply saying I made the short list.

It’d be really nice to get the job.  Theyre only looking for 10 hrs a week.  Thats perfect for my schedule.  Besides at their pay rate, I’ll make as much as a 15 hr week at hollywood.

Tonight is HotSauce’s last Thursday night at Fifth avenue.  Theyre moving on and up.  I’ll be there tonight and so should everyone else.

What the hell? — Coffee Rant

Monday, August 28th, 2006

I got a coffee from the cafeteria rather than the machine today.  This is the most vile, horrible tasting coffee ever.  It tastes like my dad’s (I have my own coffee maker, because his is so bad) or Tim Hortons *shudder*.  Its sad to think I’d rather drink instant coffee from the machine.

Why can’t people just support the local and (in my opinion) the best tasting coffee around, Cadillac — made right here in Madison heights, Michigan.

I feel like I am one of the living dead.  Time to go grab some coffee, the elixir of life.  The weekend took quite a toll on me, but thats for later.

Its The Weekend

Friday, August 25th, 2006

This week has been too long.  That’s the worst part of my work schedule:  the four-day week seems really short and the five-day week seems really long.  Actually I could be leaving right now, but then I wouldn’t get any overtime.  With a week left, I’ll grab all the overtime I can get.

Tonight I’ll be at McGee’s like every other Friday, except tonight is a special occasion.  Sara and Bill are having a wedding party.  I’d call it their co-ed bachelor/bachelorette party, but that’s a bit much.  Their wedding is next Sunday (4th), so come out and celebrate with them.  10 o’clock as usual, but I’m trying to get there before then and possibly reserve some tables and order pizza and subs.

Tomorrow is Kevin and Carolyn’s wedding…no comment.  I think I might get a new shirt and tie tonight for that.  Before the wedding, Lauren has a class reunion picnic…Oh, that’s why Bobo is in town….Sorry, I like to type my thoughts out.  I saw Bobo (Greg) who supposedly lives in Denver at the EDHS opening game, last night.  I thought it was odd to have seen him three times this summer already, but Greg would drive 10 hours just to go to a picnic.

Anyway, this is just rambling on.  Go to McGee’s tonight.

Brian:  get a haircut.

Summer is almost over

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

12 days left of summer. I’m half ready. Part of me wishes I had more free-time to go somewhere. Knowing me — even if there was another month to go — I’d still spend it trying to get in at least 40 work hours a week. Another part of me wants to go back and get out of there as soon as possible. Its so close; 36 more credits, 32 if I can convince them my internship is worth a 4 credit elective. My class schedule is quite nice this semester. Monday/Wednesday 3:30 - 10, Friday 12 - 5. I set it up to give me time for a job, only I don’t have one set up yet.

I’m not looking for anything special. I just need something that I can put up with for 10-20 hours a week, preferably not one that has me working weekend nights *cough* Hollywood Video *cough*. If I could find something that pays for my day-to day expenses (gas, food, etc…my weekly McGee’s tab), I would be so grateful not to dip into what I’ve saved this summer. The scholarship money helped a lot in my savings goal. I plan on putting most of it in a CD. I always thought those had a better ROI, but they’re only about 4.5% APY, but I guess an extra $10 a month isn’t bad.

This concludes my mini blog-out-of boredom marathon. I’m out of here in a few minutes, Going to Lauren’s for dinner then to EDHS’ first home football game.

Random fact: I have a huge craving for pierogi and crepes right now.

Because I’m Bored

Is it lunch yet? I forgot about this time last year at work. With a little more than a week left here, I’ve pretty much finished my work. There’s no time to start anything new, so what do I do? I basically go over what I’ve done and try to improve it…every day. I wish I could just space out or kill hours at a time online, but I’d feel too guilty. I managed to listen to two audio books — Harry Potter, Books 5 and 6 — and I’m about to move on to the H2G2 series, or maybe the BBC radio episodes. I’ve been on a comedy binge this week. Lewis Black, Dane Cook and my newest favorite, Daniel Tosh. I heard him a while back, guest hosting Loveline. The guy is hilarious, so I found his album True Stories I Made Up.

The Detroit Pistons verses the Pacers, the big brawl. If you could promise me that every game would end like that, I would be a season ticket holder in a heartbeat. “Are you serious? I’m gonna have to fight at the end of the game? Lets go, sounds awesome.”

This is actually just the beginning of a very long post I wrote out of boredom, but since I know the attention span of most readers is 10 seconds, I’ll break it up.

So tired

Man is today a slow work day.  I just want to go, but I have like two hours left.  Was falling asleep at my desk this morning so I bought a coffee.  The machine scammed me.  The cup was only half-filled.  Im ready for another cup.  I’m waiting for someone to come by and spot me with my head on my keyboard, asleep.  Then I’ll have to expain to someone why I sent them an email of nothing but “gggggggggggggggg”

Sweet Jesus!

TBS is showing Saved by the Bell: The College Years

Unfortunately it has taken the spot of my second favorite cranky doctor, Becker (House is #1).

No more classes for a month and a day off, today.  Well kinda, I’m going in for a few hours of overtime.  Then the rest of the day with Lauren.

And for a change in thoughts.  I won’t be at McGee’s tonight, but it is not because I am boycotting it.  McGee’s got rid of Malibu Karaoke, and some regulars who were friends with the Friday night host have decided to boycott it.  They’re really upset about it, because it came out of the blue to them.  Fact is, McGee’s has been thinking of dropping Malibu for well over a year, now.  I’ve been going there since I was old enough to drink and this is the second rotation of hosts I’ve seen.

So, while I understand why some people are pissed off, I’m not leaving my bar.

So Close, I Can Taste It

Tuesday, August 1st, 2006

You can tell its the end of summer when my procrastination levels rise while meaningless objectives are not only created, but met.  Still have an essay to write for the work scholarship.  Still have a final in 6 hours that I’ve done very little studying for.  However, I did sign up at CultSpace.com to form The Congregation of Pants Off Time, because you know how important that is.

I have one more thing to get out of the way before real work: the weekend recap…

Deadlines

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Just 2 more days.
Tomorrow is my final in signal analysis and Wednesday my packet is due for the scholarship contest.  I have done nothing for either.

I think today I will start the scholarship essay.  I’m not too worried about the final.  If one thing engineering teaches you, its trade-off evaluation.  I calcluated it out that I need a 55% on the final in order to get a B in the class.  This means so long as I don’t crap myself and rub it all over my exam like a primate, I will pass.  And passing (without bringing down my gpa) is all I want from this class.

Some people may say, “but John, if you only need a 55% to get a B, why dont you shoot for an A?”  My reply:  “Because you’re not good at math.”

I’ve done the work and a 55% is the lowest score for a B, however lets say I get an 87%, thats 32% higher on the exam.  Know what my grade is then? a B+.  a perfect 100% will get me that A-, so will an 88%.  But do you know how much that affects my GPA? Not damn much at all.

I think my time is better spent on the essay worth $5K.

How was my weekend?  It was great, but thats going in another post.
