the long drive home and my rant

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

Holy crap.  It just took me an ahour and a half to get home.

Luckily I had the Tigers to keep me company.  They made me proud again tonight with their final innings magic.  We were behind until the 7th where we took the lead with a final score of 8-5.  That makes us 31-14, thats 1 game ahead of the Sox with a .689.

Pistons lost, so what.  Its baseball that I love.  Everyone talked about the possible double championship going into the playoffs.  Parker and the man asked callers which would they prefer if tehy had to choose one.  Now we may not get either.  Wings knocked out in the first, Pistons almost out in the 2nd and already off to a bad start in the 3rd.

No one talked about the Tigers.  Even after their amazing record breaking start.  They lost the Sox series and everyone said, “See, they’re no better.  They’re gonna fail just like the past seasons.”  Pardon my french, but I said “F*** you, you nay-sayers!  Don’t be telling me how ‘you knew it all along’ 30 games later when they took the MLB’s #1 postion and have kept it to date”

Awesome

My WDET Conspiracy Theory

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

I’ve been meaning to write this for a while now. See, I have this theory of how Coleman planned to make the format changes without losing approval. This is pretty much copied word for word from my comment on Metroblogging Detroit. Go there for the whole discussion.

When Coleman came to WDET he tried something different with the pledge drive. Rather than the normal drive (ask until you reach your goal), he limited it to about 2 weeks. The “nag time” was also limited to only a few hours a day and — if I remember correctly — weekends were left alone. Soon after, they held an emergency drive to try and reach their goal. You would think a plan that resulted in failure wouldn’t be tried again.

Fast forward to the last drive before the big changes. Does anyone else remember this drive lasting only a week? I recall turning on the radio hearing a thank you and thought to myself, “Wow, they’re done already. They must have reached their goal pretty fast.”

The fact was they didn’t reach their goal by a long shot. That motivates people to try a something new and here comes Coleman to save the day. He tells everyone, in short, cut the music, add more news and profits will rise. And to help prove they will, he held the pledge drive for longer than its been in a few years.

But the plan backfired a bit. He wasn’t expecting the outrage. Sure, there were only a laughable few in the streets protesting, but that didn’t mean the non-approvers were still planning on pledging their support. Sadly, if the last drive raised more than last fall, that’s enough proof to the Board that Coleman’s format change was the right choice — regardless of the fact that the spring drive lasted much longer.

From one of the recent people laid off this past week:

Well that’s history now and we can’t go back. It’s a shame it had to work out this way. I hope Irv Reid, Steve Brown, Michael Coleman, Harvey Ovshinsky, and Marla Stone enjoy the shell of a radio station they will have left when it is all said and done.

Know this for sure, the six of us let go in last Thursday’s bloodbath will not be the only employees to leave WDET. Whether voluntarily or by further lay-offs the bleeding will continue. As one of my former co-workers (one who got to stay) told me privately Thursday: “I used to like working here, now it is just a paycheck until something better comes along.”

Better Buy a Hands-free

Friday, May 5th, 2006

The city council has voted to ban the use of a cell phone while driving…sort of. Actually then banned the use of a cell phone without a hands-free device. Hizzoner has a week to approve the ban. If and when approved, violators will be fined $100.

Movement 06

Saturday, April 15th, 2006

I havent been into much techno for the past so many years, but I’m always half drawn to the DEMF/Movement each year.  If it weren’t for getting free passes last year, I would have skipped it entirely.  There was just a press release yesterday with some of the lineup.  This just may be the year.

Three artists I’ve actually heard of outside of Detroit will be there:

  1. Josh Wink — Pretty cool
  2. Photek — even better
  3. Orb — holy crap!

I really want to go see Orb.  NO word on if there will be an admission this year.  Lets hope not.

Here is the Press Release in full:

Sexual Healing Eve

Saturday, April 1st, 2006

In celebration of a mastermind’s birthday me and many others will be throwing him a birthday party. My friend, Eric, started this a few years ago. Every year on the weekend of Marvin Gaye’s birthday (April 2nd). He finds a way to celebrate it. This year, he put together a group tour of the Motown Museum, followed by dinner, then 5th Avenue and finally having cake after midnight.

Gaye wasn’t just a motown singer that had two very sexual songs (’Lets Get it On’ and ‘Sexual Healing’). He was a revolutionary artist in the music industry and broke the mold Barry Gordy so strongly stood by.

So here’s your homework assignment for the weekend: do a little reading on the man.

WDET’s GM, Coleman, is Charged with Embezzlement

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Michael Coleman, the general manager of WDET has been charged for embezzlement at his last job at Michigan Public Media in Ann Arbor. According to the Freep:

The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office says Michael Coleman, who left his job as deputy director for Michigan Public Media in July, faces a 5-year felony. He is accused of embezzling food, alcohol, airline tickets, lodging and money for his personal use.

This sounds familiar. Wasn’t ‘DET host, Martin Bandyke, fired –I’m sorry, he ‘resigned’– for accepting concert tickets? You know, that horrible, unheard-of offense of a radio personality seeing a concert for free. Somehow I don’t think taking a small perk, like a concert ticket, compares to airline tickets and Persian rugs.

Naturally, Wayne State stands behind Coleman, yet they couldn’t wait to drop Martin. Personally, I hope Coleman is found guilty and we can shake things up at WDET again. Hopefully this time for the better.

Currently Martin Bandyke is a personality for Ann Arbor’s 107one.

The WDET Spring Fundraiser

Thursday, March 2nd, 2006

I received a comment yesterday in regards to WDET’s changes and the upcoming spring drive. Since my server was in the middle of migration, the comment was lost. Luckily I receive a copy of every published comment in my email.

I’m not saying I completely agree with this. Its a clever idea, but a little too harsh for me. I’m sticking with the traditional method of just not pledging this time around. I’m a recurring pledger, they’ll notice in the books that members aren’t renewing their pledges.

WDET’s decision to completely eliminate local programming in favor of nationally syndicated news shows is outrageous. So much for the “public” in Public Radio; local voices simply don’t exist any more.

What are they trying to do? Compete for advertising dollars?

Meanwhile, their website still outrageously claims to offer diverse music programming.

WDET’s Spring Fundraiser is coming up, March 31 through April 13. I plan to call in during their pledge drive and offer them a pledge of ZERO dollars, since this seems to be the only time they actually listen to their present - and, increasingly, former - listeners.

I urge others who feel as I do to join me. Pledge nothing, and let them know that’s what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.

And help spread the word. If you know of any other Detroit-centric blogs or message boards, get a posting out telling their readers to do the same. WDET’s last fundraiser slipped behind their expectations, and was held before the full impact of their programming change was felt. Voice your displeasure, and keep your pledge money in your pocket until they return to supporting local programming.

Metro Detroit Airport Janitor Shows True Honesty.

Friday, February 24th, 2006

Taken from Ray at DetroitWonk.com.

After Super Bowl XL this month in Detroit, one of the most notable comments made by visitors to our fair metro region was how hospitable, helpful and kind Metro Detroiters were. Here’s another word to describe Metro Detroit; honesty.

Angela Jones, an $8 an hour janitor at Detroit Metro Airport found a purse near the Starbucks coffee shop near gate A40, one of the gates Northwest Airlines uses for international flights.

Jones immediately turned it in to a Northwest ticket agent, who looked through it trying to find a driver’s license or other form of identification. It was then that the two of them discovered that it contained an estimated $10,000 in cash.

Jones reported the discovery to police, and using the ID’s in the purse they located the passenger who lost it, just as she was about to depart to Tokyo to bring the money to her family in Hong Kong.
