The Beardless Man

Friday, March 31st, 2006
“There are two kinds of people in this world that go around beardless—boys and women, and I am neither one.”
—Greek saying

Its true. After nearly 6 months, I decided to shave. But I didnt shave it back to my pre-beard style. I shaved it all. I do feel like a boy.

My beard put on quite a fight. It took nearly an hour to do. My beard trimmer will probably need to be replaced. Once I got it down to a shaveable length, I destroyed a Mach 3 in the matter of 10 minutes. It was crazy.

No pictures, I dont want to document it. You might see me at McGee’s tonight. Not sure if I’m making it out tonight, though.

I Swear to Balls its True

From Ivanna’s blog:

Magda and I were talking about how hard it is to take more than one test in one day, and she’s like, “I’m mono-testes,” and we started laughing. Then she’s like, “maybe the word ‘testicle’ had the same root as the word ‘test,” and I’m all like, “no way.” We looked it up, and SURE ENOUGH:

word History: The resemblance between testimony, testify, testis, and testicle shows an etymological relationship, but linguists are not agreed on precisely how English testis came to have its current meaning. The Latin testis originally meant “witness,” and etymologically means “third (person) standing by”: the te- part comes from an older tri-, a combining form of the word for “three,” and -stis is a noun derived from the Indo-European root st- meaning “stand.” How this also came to refer to the body part(s) is disputed. An old theory has it that the Romans placed their right hands on their testicles and swore by them before giving testimony in court. Another theory says that the sense of testicle in Latin testis is due to a calque, or loan translation, from Greek. The Greek noun parastats means “defender (in law), supporter” (para- “by, alongside,” as in paramilitary and -stats from histanai, “to stand”). In the dual number, used in many languages for naturally occurring, contrasting, or complementary pairs such as hands, eyes, and ears, parastats had the technical medical sense “testicles,” that is “two glands side by side.” The Romans simply took this sense of parastats and added it to testis, the Latin word for legal supporter, witness.

Lack of a title

Sunday, March 26th, 2006

Had a nice weekend. The Queen + Paul Rodgers concert was amazing! After the show we went to McGee’s. Diddle was there and showed me some work he’s done for the new Chicken Scratch.

Last night we went to Adam’s and watched Kingdomm of Heaven. It was an incredible movie about the Holy Crusades.

Not sure of tonight’s plans. Possibly visiting Brian after his rehearsal.

I think you will all be happy to hear that I finally got around to patching my del.icio.us script. Now you wont see a blank post when I have no links to share.

If you’re interested in the script you can find it at http://www.lonnypaul.com/lonny.paul/2006/01/01/yet-another-dailydelicious-yadd-hack-for-wordpress/

What a Week

Thursday, March 23rd, 2006

This week has been crazy; trying to get back into the groove of school.  I was given a rude awakening realizing that I had two midterms this week.  The first, electronics got me hopeless.  Monday was spent doing circuits homework due the next day.  Tuesday was spent studying for Electronics until 5am.  Wednesday I had lab and more study time before the exam.  Last night after the exam (which went decent), I crashed once I got home.

Today has been spent studying for the Circuits midterm that takes place in two hours.  There is C++ homework due by midnight, but I think I’ll skip this week’s.  I can afford to.

With all this madness, it ends on a good note.  Tomorrow night I’ll be at the Palace seeing Paul Rodgers fronting one of the greatest bands of all time: Queen!
I’ve heard some of the recordings with Paul Rodgers (from Bad Company) on WCSX and it sounds great.  I can’t wait.

Well its all over.  Spring Break, that is.  A ton has happened.  You can see pictures from Friday in my gallery (img.paralleljohnny.com).  Did I get done all that I wanted done?  Not even close, but at least it was some progress.

WDET’s GM, Coleman, is Charged with Embezzlement

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Michael Coleman, the general manager of WDET has been charged for embezzlement at his last job at Michigan Public Media in Ann Arbor. According to the Freep:

The Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office says Michael Coleman, who left his job as deputy director for Michigan Public Media in July, faces a 5-year felony. He is accused of embezzling food, alcohol, airline tickets, lodging and money for his personal use.

This sounds familiar. Wasn’t ‘DET host, Martin Bandyke, fired –I’m sorry, he ‘resigned’– for accepting concert tickets? You know, that horrible, unheard-of offense of a radio personality seeing a concert for free. Somehow I don’t think taking a small perk, like a concert ticket, compares to airline tickets and Persian rugs.

Naturally, Wayne State stands behind Coleman, yet they couldn’t wait to drop Martin. Personally, I hope Coleman is found guilty and we can shake things up at WDET again. Hopefully this time for the better.

Currently Martin Bandyke is a personality for Ann Arbor’s 107one.
