Hangovers?

Saturday, December 31st, 2005

Tonight is a huge drinking night for most people, so I thought I’d share some advice on preventing hangovers.

via Lifehacker and eHow

Eat a good dinner before you go out. Also, drink a glass or two of milk. The food will absorb some of the alcohol you are about to drink, and the milk will line your stomach, creating a protective layer.

Be safe tonight and happy new year.

The Pizza of Detroit

Friday, December 30th, 2005

Off to go pizza hoping around town. “Whats pizza hopping” you say? About 5 or so of us will go from pizza place to pizza place around Detroit ordering a small pizza or a few slices if possible. We plan on sampling from a ton of pizzarias. Its like a wine tour but with pizza.

Later tonight we’ll be at McGee’s, so come on up.

Update: Pizza tasting didn’t quite go as planned. We may have to wait until spring/summer to do a genuine tasting. We did however go to several pizza places in the Metro area specific to Detroit: Niki’s (Greektown), Buddy’s (Sterling Hts.), Cloverleaf (Eastpointe), Buscemi (a Michigan party store/deli chain). Although we have insufficient data, so far Niki’s pizza is the leader.
There are so many more places we need to taste.

Any suggestions on Detroit-area pizzarias for next time?

Oh the Holidays

Wednesday, December 28th, 2005

Well alright. The holidays are winding down and my internet connection is back. Its been a rough couple of days without it.

I think it has been a week since my last update and there is so much to say. I’ll just have a quick little recap…

Wednesday was the book signing at the Rowland Cafe. I posted some pictures on the site. After the signing we spent the rest of the day downtown, going from builing to building. We ended at Hella’s in Greektown for some dinner. We (Lauren, Lisa and I) were there from 11 - 7. Pedestrian traffic is starting to pick up and I love it.

Thursday Tommy from McGee’s had his first show at TNT’s and was great. The bar fight that preceeded it wasn’t so great (for the fact that we knew the people who started it). Check out the band on myspace http://www.myspace.com/refueled.

Friday was Christmas Eve Eve and spent at McGees (if you haven’t realized yet, McGee’s is like my Cheers. I think I hugged, kissed and wished a merry Christmas to more people there than at my own family gatherings).

Christmas Eve was spent at my Aunt’s, then I visited Lauren at her Great AuntDelores’ for a bit and we both visited my Great Aunt Kate (who happens to be Delores’ best friend by pure coincidence). We went to midnight service with Lauren’s sisters and exchanged gifts. I got Lauren Burberry Brit, a sweater hoodie, season 1 of The Muppet Show and a teapot with tea leaves. Lauren got me the one thing I thought I would never get, a black Ipod Nano!

Christmas Day I spent at Lauren’s house for dinner, then we visited Shaun, Star and baby Kyra at their new home. Kyra is growing so fast. We bought her a stffed Roo from Winnie the Pooh and two sleepers from the Disney store.

I got plenty of other great gifts, but I’m not going to list them all. I was able to, however cross a lot of things off my wishlist.

All my grades are in and I kicked butt. Circuits B, DigiLogic A-, Music History A, my two labs A and A. Semester GPA of 3.68 and a cumulative of 3.15. I am finally getting in a range I accept.

If you havent been to my site in a month, I have beeen working on it. Only half of it is finished but I have all break to work on it. New pictures are up and I even have a calendar that syncs with my pda. Right now, you’ll see that I will be at 5th Avenue tonight and Brians on Friday and Dylans for New Year’s Eve. I try to add all my dates in the calendar. When school starts up, my classes will be added.

So much more has happened, but I know how people hate when I write novels.

WDET GM Responds to the Public

Tuesday, December 20th, 2005

I really should be studying for my last final, but I need to get this out. Too many people have been coming here for WDET news.

There has been a large outcry against the format change at WDET. Most notably, the change from a music-filled weekday to an all-syndicated news-format. The Detroit blogosphere has been very active about this. There was even a website dedicated to it. I, amongst many others wrote to the GM, Michael Coleman. I must admit, I do enjoy some of the new programming. I just can’t believe they would clear out ALL music programming in the weekday. That show I used to get info on the Rowland Cafe, Ala Carte: gone. It was a weekly, 15 minute spot on the Judy Adams program.

I got this late, because Bloglines was down, but Michael Coleman released a statement yesterday afternoon in response to the protests…

In the past few days, I and other employees at WDET, have heard from many of you. The letters, phone calls and e-mails were thoughtful, heartfelt and passionate. I understand the role WDET plays in your life, and because of that, every time the station has made changes over the years listeners have been very vocal about how they felt. This time was no exception. I’ve heard from people who were disappointed in the new programming and from people who are very supportive of it. Regardless of how you feel, know that these decisions were painstakingly difficult, made with tremendous consideration and focused on the mission WDET has to serve our entire metropolitan Detroit community. The rationale for the changes were very straightforward * to save and strengthen this important public radio service. That being said, change of any kind is seldom easy.

“American City” Update.

Wednesday, December 14th, 2005

Sorry if anyone went down to the Rowland Cafe today. The book signing was moved to next Wednesday, Dec. 21st. I was down there today before class. The building is amazing. I think I spent the entire hour staring up and around. I’m going to try my hardest to be there next Wednesday. I’ll bring a camera and post photos.

Also, I’ve noticed a boom in traffic. Welcome, new readers. Feel free to comment.

“American City” Brings Pride to Detroit

Sunday, December 11th, 2005

American CityAbout two weeks ago, The Metro Times ran an article about two Chi-town residents who came to Detroit on assignment for the NYTimes and were completely awe-struck by Detroit. They were so inspired that they decided to make American City: Detroit Architecture 1845-2005.

From the MT article, Still Standing:

According to Sharoff and Zbaren, what makes Detroit so interesting is that its architects have looked to the East Coast for inspiration. In a lot of ways, you could transplant our buildings in lower Manhattan, and they’d fit New York’s proportions. They say we’re a Midwestern city with extreme beaux-arts elegance and art deco attitude, and we’re also modernist to the max.

The building that started this: the recently reopened-to-the-public Guardian Building. It just so happened that about a month ago, my friend Lisa made a visit to the building to take some pictures. While there, she met Shawn Santo and Kevin Borsay, The founders of Pure Detroit and the recently opened Rowland Cafe. Lisa received much more than some photos. She had a ‘private seminar’ with the two, learning all there is to know about The Guardian as well as Wirt Rowland, whom the Cafe is in honor of (The Guardian’s architect).

There has been a great buzz going around for the book, Santo, Borsay and Detroit architecture. The Free Press recently interviewed Sharoff and Zbaren, the author and photographer of American City. WDET interviewed Shawn Santo on the weekly cuisine spot, Ala Carte. And there was also a local news spot for the book found here.

Sharoff and Zbaren on aWDET news spot:

They think that if it’;s here [Detroit], it can’t be great. We had so many people who were like, we’re sorry you have to be here almost. A very strange attitude. What is that all about?

I have had so many people say, I’m so sorry you had to come to Detroit. And I say, I’m so proud to be here. I’m so honored to be here.

Sharoff and Zbaren will be at the Rowland Cafe in the Guardian building for a book signing. Also there will be live music by Blackman and Arnold. It all happens this Wednesday 12/14 12/21 from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm. Show some support for Detroit and be there.

Whats Going On Album Cover
Album Cover of Whats Going On

Has anyone seen the new Hennessey ad?  There is a billboard of it on eastbound I-94 just past I-75.  If you ever drive in that area, look out for it.  This ad upsets me and intrigues me at the same time.  I had never seen this picture before.  It was obviously taken during the “Whats Going On” Album shoot, as he is standing in the rain with that black raincoat seen on the cover.  They made it black and white which also took me off guard as my computer’s desktop is a B&W version of the cover, which I did myself.  I want to know if this picture is available somewhere.  It’s exactly what I’ve been looking for to have framed in my room.  There are plenty of Gaye prints out, but none like this.  If anyone knows where I can get a print of this photo, please let me know.

Now to the controversy.  What made Hennessey think it was a wise idea to use a victim of alcohol abuse in their ad?  Marvin, later in his career, had become severely addicted to drugs and alcohol.  This abuse had caused him to become paranoid and suicidal.  His life was taken after a heated argument with his father (also an alcoholic) who shot Marvin.  Alcohol did not enhance this musical icon’s life, but instead caused his death.

What do you think?

False Hope of a Snow Day

Snowday? HAH

I swear we could have 2 feet of snow, all expressways closed and no heat or electricity in the buildings and Wayne would still stay open.

In two weeks from today, I am officially done with the semester. I cannot wait. Here are a few things I am looking forward to this break…

  • Seeing Lauren more.
  • Seeing friends more.
  • Work on ParallelJohnny.com version 5 (I think I’m at 4 now).
  • Possibly redo the BSH site (I always say that).
  • Blogging more.
  • Comment more on other blogs. (I swear I read them, guys.)
  • Get the others of NGR to blog more.
  • Do more leisure reading.
  • Drink (More/Less) beer (I haven’t decided if its more or less yet).
  • Play The Warriors for PS2 (I won’t even rent it until break, cause I know I’ll get hooked.)

Also, I added a poll to the right of the site. If I get enough responses, I may keep it and change it weekly or so.
