A Question For My Fellow Geeks

Monday, June 27th, 2005

Okay, I have a raincheck for that WD 250 GB hard drive from Microcenter. Today I found from Tiger Direct a Seagate hard drive with the same capacity, speed, interface. Advantages include 8MB buffer (WD’s was only 2MB), only one rebate to deal with (WD has two) and its $4 cheaper (after shipping). The only disadvantage I can see is that its in OEM packaging. Anyone ever have trouble with Tiger Direct? Its a better deal than Microcenter. Hell even with shipping time, it might come to my house before MC gets their shipment in.

What do you think? Yay or Nay?

You Took a White Orchid, Turned It Blue

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

First off, go to img.paralleljohnny.com. I just uploaded a ton of pictures.

Yesterday was a long day. I woke up and cleaned my car out. I spent about 2 hours and still didnt finish. Then I left to Eric’s soon-to-be-old apartment to help him move his major furniture into the new place in RO. It was so hot, luckily I charged my AC that morning. The new place is smaller, but its in a great location. He’s just off 6th and Washington, walking distance to any downtown store/resturaunt.

Afterwards Lauren met with Lisa and me at Lisa’s house. Lisa called up her friend Victoria and the four of us went to McGee’s for kareoke.

Tonight is the Parcel Fireworks in GPW. As soon as my laundry is done, I’m heading to Lauren’s to go.

In other news…
I went to Microcenter for the hard drive to find out they were sold out. Luckily, they said I could get a raincheck and the rebates would still be valid after expiration. I did get the 512 ram and holy crap, it made a huge difference. I cant wait for all that storage. Oh, anyone have a cd rom drive to donate? Mine just died. No need for burning capabilites.

Camping Trip 2005

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

This year’s camping trip has been decided to be the 5th, 6th and 7th of August. It will be at White’s Canoe Livery – M-70 Site. I need a roster of who is going for reservations. If you would like to go shoot me an email. I may put up a site to register.

The camping cost is $12 for the weekend. A deposit for either tubing ($4) or Canoeing ($8 x2 people) is required to get that camping rate and must be paid at the time of reservation. This means you give me your deposit money ASAP and I put the reservation on my credit card. The $12 is paid once you get there (if you decide to cancel, you only lose the deposit, not the $12).

Tubes are $8. Canoes are $32 (up to 2 people can split price). Kyaks are $20. Rafts are $50 (up to 4 people can split price).

Pass the word on to everyone.

Baby Molly

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

Karl signed up to my photo gallery and uploaded some pictures of Molly. Go take a look.

Register yourself and upload your own photos. Even if I don’t know you, you’ll get 5 MB storage to start. I’ll increase it if its a worthy cause. I won’t limit your bandwidth either.

Pay Day, Tech Mumbo Jumbo

Thursday, June 23rd, 2005

My first check comes in today. I can’t wait. Lauren and I are going shopping tomorrow. Tonight after work I’m going to microcenter to buy ram and that hard drive.

250 Gigs…. what, might you ask, am I going to do with 250 Gigs? Well heres my partition scheme:

C: Windows - 20 GB (this is on a seperate HD and not part of the 250.)
D: Music - 40 GB
E: Shows - 40 GB
F: Movies - 20 GB
G: Videos - 20 GB (dump bin for anything not a movie or tv show)
H: Pictures - 2 GB
I: Documents - 5 GB
J: Games - 10 GB
K: Programs - 10 GB (if the 20 GB drive fills up)
L: Backup - 30 GB (App Installers, Networked Computer’s Backup Files)
M: Temp - 30 GB (Swap file, temp folder location, unsorted downloads)

That leaves about 40 GB left for the future. Possibly more OSes.

Very nice.

Good Afternoon

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2005

Its been a slow day. I submitted my work for review yesterday and haven’t gotten any response yet. There’s not too much I can do before then. So I’ll do some boring document reading and enjoy my music.

All of my sites (this one included) have been moved out of my house. Thanks to BleuNote.net the sites are now hosted on a much faster server. If you’re looking for good web hosting, I suggest BleuNote.

I also have a new photo site, http://img.paralleljohnny.com. I haven’t uploaded anything yet, but anyone is more than welcome to register and use it to share photos.

Lastly, since I now that my server is spared from webhosting, I’ll be turning it into a media center. As inexpensively as possible, It will get a 512 MB Ram upgrade (640 MB total) and a 250 GB hard drive(+20 GB already there). Besides that, I’ll put in my WinTV card, an old Voodoo Card and an old Jaton video card with composite out. I figured I’d pair the Voodoo with the Jaton to take some load off and make use of dual screens. Jaton/Voodoo combo to the TV, Savage DDR to my monitor. If you don’t see what im going for let me spell it out. This computer, with its massive storage space and tv tuner, will be a monster TIVO. No idea as to what I’m talking about, still? Go here.

LaunchCast Plus

Monday, June 20th, 2005

OK. This is going to sound like an ad, but I’m just very happy about this service.

I just subscribed to Yahoo!’s Launchcast Plus service today. I must say, I’m very pleased.

It costs $4/month, but I figured I’ll only have it for the summer while at GD. It has a rating system that outbeats any other. If you and another subscriber have similar interests, it will pick some of that person’s favorites to play on your station. It customizes the station completely, falling just short of letting you create a playlist. I think this is better, though. I’m constantly being introduced to new artists based on the artists, albums and songs that I rate. If it throws me something rediculous, I just click “never play again.”

Click, Wham! no more Celine Dion.

You dont have to pay for the service. The free version is very worthwhile. Go and create a station (no signup, just use your yahoo id). Then tell me your Y! id so I can look at your tastes and possibly make you an influencer to my station, or you can add me to your influencial list.

My Cubicle

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Okay, so by pure luck my cubicle is the size of my bosses’. I need ideas on what to decorate it with (besides favorite Dilbert and Get Fuzzy strips).
I have plenty to work with:
1 5×2 desk in front of me (I face the entrance).
1 4×2 workdesk (file drawers) behind me.
next to the workdesk is a lateral file cabinet 4×1.
above the workdesk and cabinet are two storage cabinets side by side, each 4×1x1.5.
to my left is a dry erase board hanging on the wall.
every horizontal face has pushpin boards.

what should i fill this space with?

My Daily Work Update

Thursday, June 16th, 2005

Hey look, a post after lunch. Maybe its because I actually have tasks now. I’m enjoying work. My boss has me working with someone writing one of those painful RDDs I’ve been talking about. She’s not much ahead of me as far as knowing what to do, which is both good and bad. She lets me take charge a bit.

Right now we have this HUGE pile of data. We need to filter it out to a smaller pile yet still huge. Then we need to document on it. The problem is this data can be grouped and sorted into like 10 different ways and we need to find the best way to organize this data. We then take the data and document it in finer detail.

Its not too bad, though. I’m enjoying it. I’m getting out of here in about 40 minutes. I tried getting in earlier, but only managed it by 10 minutes. I’m gonna try getting in at 7 tomorrow so I can leave by 3:30. Now since I rarely ever get replies, I’m sure most of you don’t read this far. I wan’t to post a question, but I want people to respond. Hence its going in a new post.

Pistons, Work, TV, Lunch, Blah, Blah, Blah

Wednesday, June 15th, 2005

Wasn’t planning on being up as late as I was last night. I laid in bed at 9:30 and watched the Pistons game. I was going to fall asleep to it, but once that 3rd quarter came, I had no choice but to watch.

During commercials, I found myself watching The Real Gilligan’s Island. It was pretty good for a reality show. All their challenges are taken straight from the show. The Skippers (theres were two of all characters and they competed for the spot) had a challenge where they and their little buddies were in a rowboat. The boats had a leak and they were each given a half coconut shell. The first boat to submerge was the loser.

Here’s a great add-in. The losers don’t go home. Instead, they are banished to the other side of the island, where they will have to fend for themselves for the remainder of the game.

Its been over a week in this cubicle. I’ve decided they wont move me, so I’ll start making it my own. I’m just not sure what to do yet.

I may have jsut won a free lunch. I hope Iwas the first to reply.
