DTE Followup

I had my interview today and it went very well. Eventhough I slept right through my alarms and skipped Economics, I made it just in time. My interviewer was an East Detroit Alumn, which made a great ice breaker. I told him all about me, answered his 5 case scenario questions (I noticed I scored a 21/25 on them), and then it was my turn to find out what the job was about. He couldn’t tell me the pay or what location I would be at, because that is all up to HR. But it doesn’t sound like a job for me. I’m not yet convinced that I should pass any future oppritunities given in the next two years for this job.

From talking to the interviewer and a girl who works for them in the Chem Lab, the job is not well suited for Electricial Engineering, especially if I favor computer technology. It is a dirty, “hard hat” type of job. If it were a summer internship, I would accept in a second; however, if I take the job I must stay there for 2 years or until graduation. My plan is to wait for them to call me next week. If they want me, I’ll want at least $15,000 a year (I’d only work half the year), a location close to home such as the St. Clair Plant and I want to tour the site to see a typical day at work. I dont think thats too much to ask. Basically, I don’t want the job unless its totally worth it to me financially and educationally.

DTE does have a number of electrical engineering co-ops, but they’d be doing traditional EE stuff like power distribution, not computer stuff. While they do signifcant process systems work as well, if you’re into designing chipsets, I agree that DTE would not be a good place to get experience. My daughter is an EE and did a summer internship for 3 years at DTE, then hired in last fall.
